Appendix A — About me

Last modified on 23. October 2026 at 13:45:54

Some people are interested in me and what I do all day. For those people, I have created a simple page about my life and interests. In addition, this page is also part of the appendix of my English book about data science and statistics. This page contains content generated using generative AI, which I have personally curated.

A.1 The story of my life

Prof. Dr. habil. Jochen Kruppa-Scheetz is a German biostatistician and data scientist specializing in agricultural sciences, bio-data science, and medical biometry.

Academic Background & Career

  • Education: He studied Plant Biotechnology with a focus on biostatistics at Leibniz Universität Hannover and earned his doctorate (Dr. rer. hum. biol.) in machine learning and epidemiology at the University of Lübeck. In 2024, he completed his Habilitation in Bioinformatics at Freie Universität Berlin in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science.

  • Charité Berlin & Early Positions: Before his current professorship, he held statistical and bioinformatic research positions at Universitätsklinikum Göttingen and Tierärztliche Hochschule Hannover. From 2018 to 2021, he led the Working Group for Statistical Bioinformatics at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, where he also served as deputy head of the Institute of Biometry and Clinical Epidemiology until 2021.

  • Hochschule Osnabrück: Since 2022, he has served as Professor of Bio Data Science in the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and Landscape Architecture at Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences.

Research & Teaching Focus

  • Research Interests: His work spans applied statistical modeling, machine learning techniques for classification, metagenomics, high-dimensional omics data analysis, and phenotyping frameworks in agricultural sciences.

  • Teaching & Open Science: He focuses on accessible biostatistics instruction for students in life sciences and agriculture. He creates open-access educational content, authors online interactive statistics material, and hosts educational data science videos on YouTube.

A.2 How do I teach?

“Help me to do it by myself, and do it not for me!” – Montessori principle

How can I help you solve your problems? I have plenty of experience in teaching. Furthermore, I am a certified university teacher, having completed three certification programmes, including the Zertifikatsprogramm PROFHOS (Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences), Berlin Certificate for University Teaching (Berlin Centre for Higher Education), and Further Education for Teaching in Higher Education (Center of Excellence for Higher Education in Lower Saxony). The Flexcellence framework is the basis of my teaching and lectures. Therefore, I try to incorporate online elements into my lectures as much as possible. The tools may be different, but the aim is always the same as the Flexelence initiative quotes: “[…] increased flexibility applies to both curricular content and learning formats in terms of time and location. In the future, students should have greater autonomy to decide what, how, when, and where they learn.” For me, the future is now.

What do I teach? I teach statistics, mathematics and, more broadly, data science in over eleven degree programmes, ranging from landscape architecture to agriculture and biology. Prior to my professorship, I taught students in medicine and life sciences. Lecture groups range in size from around 10 to 200 students. Regardless of group size, the clear focus is on working hands-on with data to get things done. I have a question, some information, and a problem that I want to solve. I produced a collection of over one hundred statistical and mathematical exam questions with video support on YouTube. These can be used by students to learn in a time- and location-independent way. The exam questions are based on random number generators that allow a diversity of possible outcomes.

Further, I developed the concept of an impromptu maths lecture with live calculations. Students can use Tweedback and other anonymous tools to reduce the burden of asking questions during a maths lecture. The lecture is broadcast live via YouTube stream. For the advanced semesters, I designed a portfolio exam consisting of different sub-questions that students could solve independently of the lectures. However, problem solving is accompanied by the lecture. Some students take advantage of this freedom and solve the puzzles by themselves. I embrace this freedom of learning. Finally, all my lectures avoid fixed PowerPoint presentations and are based on teaching notes that are generated in Goodnotes during the lecture.

I have amassed a wealth of experience in statistical consultancy, providing over 1,000 consultations throughout my career, primarily in the life sciences. Consultants hold bachelor’s, master’s and PhD degrees. My consulting work used to be focused on medical contexts, but now I am more involved in agricultural science. As part of the consulting work, I also give lectures for PhD programmes outside of the context of the Hochschule Osnabrück. Feel free to contact me for more information and to discuss possible fees.
